Starting July 4, 2025, students riding the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) and Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) now have access to dedicated queuing lanes at all stations, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced.
The move comes after the June 20 policy increasing the student fare discount to 50% across all three major rail lines, a measure set to remain in effect until 2028.
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said the initiative aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to make commuting safer and more convenient, particularly for students hurrying to school.
A day before the rollout, Senator Raffy Tulfo urged the DOTr to improve the implementation of the student discount program. He recommended that fare discounts be made available through stored-value Beep cards, noting that these cards often run out before midday, based on an onsite inspection by his staff.
Meanwhile, the LRT-1, operated by the Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), has yet to implement student-only lanes. Instead, it is adjusting queuing systems at its stations to better manage foot traffic and reduce waiting times for commuters.
