On Wednesday, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has confirmed its cooperation with the ICC on securing witnesses in the drug war case against former President Rodrigo Duterte, who is charged with crimes against humanity.
"There's an official [talk] already. They have gone to our Witness Protection Program to secure the people who may be needed to testify in The Hague, and so we have given our support and cooperation, as this request is well-founded—based on the safety and necessity to bring the witnesses safely to The Hague," Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla told ANC's Headstart.
The DOJ will also provide financial assistance to the witnesses for their travel to The Hague.
"Yung mga testigo lang, 'yung mga 'yan, wala namang kaya sa buhay, walang-wala rin, 'yun lang talaga ang tutulungan," Remulla added.
Meanwhile, Kristina Conti, a lawyer representing the EJK victims, was 'pleasantly surprised' by the DOJ's cooperation and further stated that it aligns with that of the drug war victims.
"I'm also more surprised on the offer of assistance to victims who would testify before the court," she said.
Conti also added that the DOJ's action may encourage more EJK victims to testify.
