"Well, we will see." This is what PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo said when asked about arresting rallyists who will burn effigies during SONA.
This was after PNP General Nicolas Torre III issued a warning against burning effigies, citing environmental concerns.
“We hope they honor our request to not burn effigies so that we can avoid tension and friction,” Fajardo said in an interview on Saturday, July 26.
They also said that maximum tolerance will be implemented during SONA.
The PNP previously warned protesters that they will arrest protesters who burn effigies, citing violations of Republic Act 8749, or the Clean Air Act, and RA 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.
It can be remembered that the Quezon City Police District filed a complaint against militant group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan last SONA 2023 for the same charges.
