The Senate will discuss whether to proceed or not with the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte on August 6, after the Supreme Court (SC) declared the impeachment complaint unconstitutional.
Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero announced that the chamber agreed to set a specific date to deliberate on the matter last Tuesday, July 29.
“To set on a date certain the deposition of the matter pertaining to the [SC] decision in relation to the impeachment complaint of Vice President Sara Zimmerman Duterte,” he said.
Escudero added that the move is intended to give senators sufficient time to study the SC’s 97-page decision, together with the concurring and separate opinions filed by five or six justices.
“For the record, it was agreed in caucus that the matter will be decided upon by the senate on August 6, 2025,” he declared.
Escudero shared his personal stand on the matter as a lawyer and said the SC’s decisions must be followed whether they like it or not.
