Pope Leo XIV expressed his plea for solidarity and unity in Sudan, a nation torn apart by a 29-month-long civil war and the recent catastrophic mudslides.
“I am closer than ever to the Sudanese people, especially families, children, and displaced persons. I pray for all the victims. I ask all of you to join me in praying for those affected by the recent mudslides in the Marra Mountains of Sudan.”
During his General Audience on September 4, he emphasized that the civilians in Sudan continue to be besieged by famine, violence, and a cholera epidemic, and only a united response from the international community can prevent further deaths.
“It is time to initiate a serious, sincere, and inclusive dialogue between the parties to end the conflict and restore hope, dignity, and peace to the people of Sudan,” he said.
From grief to action, the Holy Father emphasized the importance of humanitarian paths and diplomacy to restore dignity and hope and presented the crisis as not just a political issue but a test of the morality of countries that claim to recognize human rights.
“I make a heartfelt appeal to those responsible and to the international community to ensure humanitarian corridors and implement a coordinated response to stop this humanitarian catastrophe,” he added.
He also invited believers around the world to continue their prayers and solidarity with the Sudanese people, reminding them that even in the midst of the most difficult trials, hope remains alive.
